The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is holding its International Road Check May 4-6. During those 72 hours, vehicle inspectors conduct inspections for commercial vehicles throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The International Road Check program raises awareness of the North American Standard Inspection program and keeps highways and roads safe. Drivers and carriers should be performing regular maintenance on their vehicles to ensure they’re operating responsibly and safely.

This Year’s Inspection

This year’s emphasis will be on vehicle lighting and drivers’ hours of service. If a vehicle and its driver pass the inspection, they should receive a CVSA decal; vehicles with the decal are not reinspected during the time the decal is valid.

2020 Results

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the “lamps inoperable” violation was the number one vehicle lighting violation in 2020. In North America, the top driver out-of-service violation was hours of service, which accounted for nearly 35% of all driver out-of-service situations.

Here is a summary of the top 5 out-of-service (OOS) violations in North America:
