In severe weather, semi-truck tire chains can be a lifesaver. So, when should you use chains?

When Should I Use Semi-truck Tire Chains?
Severe Weather
Chains are most effective when they are applied in heavy snowfall. As snow increases the distance between your tires and the road, tire chains push back on the snow to propel your tires forward.
Importantly, using chains on bare pavement can shred your tires to bits. To increase grip and prevent damage, apply chains only when snow or ice covers the road.
Legal
Several situations require chains to be used. Here are a few examples.
- Some states have designated chain control areas where applying semi-truck tire chains is mandatory. These areas are typically indicated with posted signage.
- Some states require all truckers to carry chains through the cold season, in addition to mandatory tire chain areas. For example, Colorado requires drivers to carry chains from September 1 to May 31.
- Snowy mountain passes may also require chains. These passes often include overhead flashing signage to warn drivers to put on chains.
- Several companies also require chains to be used for sensitive deliveries.
Despite semi-truck tire chains being an integral part of winter safe driving, they can also damage your tires if misused.
Preventing Damage with Semi-Truck Tire Chains
Before you put chains on your tires, make sure that you NEVER…
- Apply chains loosely. Free-hanging chains can whip and destroy your tires.
- Exceed speeds of 25 – 30 mph. Beyond this speed, tire chains can shred tire treads.
- Use chains on bare pavement. The chains will eat through the tire.
- Passively use chains. Frequently check that chain tension remains taut.
Semi-truck tire chains are a powerful tool for driving safely in severe weather. When appropriately applied, they promote outstanding grip in snow and ice. If misused, they can chew through tires, causing significant damage.
Obey all traffic safety laws and use chains when mandated.
