As the flatbed passed underneath the X-ray, the CBP officer squinted at the screen. Long lines of rebar shone like glow sticks on the picture. The officer’s eyes traced the load until they landed on something peculiar. Beneath the rebar lay a line of bricks.
The officer dialed the K9 unit.
The dogs could barely be contained, sniffing and yelping at a space just below the flatbed floor. As officers peeled back the floorboards, a white-brick road was unveiled, revealing more than 350 packages of cocaine, valued at over $20 million.
And the craziest part? This event was only one day after another trucking bust worth $4 million in cocaine.
A Disturbing Pattern
During an interdiction on July 29, El Paso County officers confiscated a truck stuffed with over $4 million in cocaine and $7,000 cash, just a day after the $20 million bust. Unfortunately, this isn’t a coincidence, but a pattern.
Freightwaves reported over $51.4 million in drugs and counterfeit goods seized in relation to the transportation industry in April alone. Highlighted cases include concealed contraband in produce, construction materials, and trailers. Even as interdiction increases, officials can hardly keep pace with the production of cocaine and other drugs.
Why are Truckers Being Targeted?
Tragically, commercial trucks are highly appealing to traffickers.
Because of the high volume of traffic across the border, compromised trucks often appear identical to legitimate loads. Additionally, concealment is often complex and requires specialized inspection, including X-rays and K9 units, to detect contraband. Officials simply don’t have time to perform a specialized inspection of every truck that passes through the border.
Saddest of all, many truckers have no idea that they are moving illicit freight, like the trucker in this story. Often referred to as ‘blind mules’, these unfortunate drivers are often selected for their reputations for honesty. When they aren’t looking, drugs are smuggled onboard, framing the carrier if things go south.
Even if carriers can avoid being targeted, all truckers are feeling the influence of drug smuggling in the recent explosion of nuclear verdicts, rocketing insurance premiums to unprecedented rates.
