Why are Diesel Prices Rising?
At the start of 2026, analysts from the EIA predicted that diesel prices would average $3.50/gallon for the year.
Then, the Iranian conflict happened.
Iran is positioned at the epicenter of global oil production. When the conflict began, the Strait of Hormuz, the oil artery that produces 20% of the world’s oil supply, was halted.
Within a week, diesel prices spiked 96 cents, the largest jump since the EIA began tracking data in 1994.
How High Will Diesel Prices Get?
Frankly, no one has a clear idea of exactly how high prices could rise, but some data can give us a clue.
The EIA has updated its forecast to a year-average of $4.12 per gallon. With current prices at $5.36 and an all-time high of $5.82, that can give us a rough idea… but nothing is certain.
Much of the cost of diesel is dependent on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. If activity resumes, prices could potentially stabilize again.
