The COVID-19 pandemic may be keeping more people at home, but the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is still holding its annual Operation Safe Driver Week this week, July 12th-18th. This safety initiative, which takes place in North America, encourages law personnel to identify drivers who are operating vehicles unsafely.
“It’s essential that this enforcement initiative, which focuses on identifying and deterring unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding, go on as scheduled,” said CVSA President Sgt. John Samis with the Delaware State Police. “As passenger vehicle drivers are limiting their travel to necessary trips and many commercial motor vehicle drivers are busy transporting vital goods to stores, it’s more important than ever to monitor our roadways for safe transport.”
U.S. driving speeds measured during the beginning of April in selected cities show that drivers have increased their speeds, at times, by as much as 75% since early 2020. Due to these findings, the CVSA has selected speeding as their focus area for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week.
Law enforcement may be focused on speeding, but they’ll also be looking for other issues such as failure to use a seatbelt, reckless or aggressive driving, etc. Now is a good time to make sure your truck maintenance is up to date to ensure you don’t get any additional citations if you’re pulled over.
