super bowl traffic

As Chiefs and Eagles players prepare for one of the largest American events of the year, they aren’t the only ones worrying about interferences.

Though the Super Bowl brings some of life’s greatest joys—football, wings, and guacamole, that is—it also brings with it some frustrating and dangerous challenges. For truckers, those challenges are especially difficult.

For all its good, here are a few disruptions to expect with Super Bowl traffic, and a few tips for how to avoid them.

Impaired Driving

Unfortunately, the good times at the Super Bowl party follow some fans home.

NHTSA data shows that alcohol-related driver fatalities double the week of the Super Bowl.

How to avoid impaired drivers:

• If possible, avoid Super Bowl traffic on major roadways.
• Practice defensive driving. Though you can’t predict the action of other drivers, you can be vigilant.
• Encourage your own peers and family to avoid intoxicated driving. A small effort by a few can prevent a tragedy for many.

Super Bowl Traffic

Though Super Bowl traffic will see a slight bump nationwide, urban areas of Arizona will be slammed.

To avoid traffic, plan or modify your routes now in areas of potential congestion. Consider alternative routes if your shipment is making stops in major cities.

Competition for Snack Shipments

If your typical load make-up includes snacks and beverages, you can expect to see a surge of competition for these loads.

How to avoid losing out on loads:

• Ideally, get out ahead of the events and book these loads well in advance.
• Capitalize on this opportunity and book loads with goods you’ve not shipped before. This practice will aid you in increasing your freight portfolio.

Super Bowl Sunday is a beloved holiday for millions of Americans. For those truckers that are hauling to ensure this tradition continues on, be sure to prepare for dangerous drivers, traffic, and at least a billion chicken wings.
