This year, the CVSA is placing special emphasis on ELD tampering, falsification & manipulation, as well as cargo securement.

Focus Area: ELD Tampering

In 2025, falsification of records of duty status was the second most-cited driver violation, with over 50,000 violations recorded. This year, the CVSA has placed a renewed emphasis on ELD compliance.

Here are the items that officers will be scrutinizing:

  • Driving time recorded as off-duty: Any mileage that doesn’t align with log entries is a definite red flag
  • Unassigned driving segments: Miles recorded with no driver attached to them will be cited
  • Edits without annotations: Recorded changes without proper documentation will also be flagged
  • Device disconnection: If an officer discovers that an ELD has been unplugged to drive off the books, that’s a one-way ticket to the roadside
  • Mismatch between ELD data and supporting documents: Contradictions between fuel receipts, BOLs, and GPS data may lead to further investigation
  • Patterned log inconsistencies: Ironically, logs that are too perfect may also be cause for investigation

Falsifying ELD records is risky business. Some citations can reach up to $16,000… so take time to ensure your records are up to date before the Roadcheck begins.

Focus Area: Cargo Securement

Regarding your truck, the CVSA will be closely inspecting your cargo securement for the 2026 Roadcheck.

The decision to highlight cargo securement stems from a growing safety epidemic: unsecured loads account for 730 fatalities and 17,000 injuries every year. During the 2025 Roadcheck, inspectors recorded over 18,000 cargo securement violations.

During the 2026 Roadcheck, officers will be inspecting these elements of your cargo:

  • Tie-down quantity and condition: If straps and chains exceed the working load limit, you can count on an automatic violation
  • Blocking and bracing: Cargo must be totally devoid of any shifting to pass
  • Anchor points: Cracks, warping, or other structural weaknesses will be flagged immediately
  • Doors and tailboards: Your doors and tailboards should shut entirely and be adequately secured
  • Dunnage and spare equipment: Tarps, chains, and other accessories should be securely fastened, with minimal slack
  • Forward movement prevention: Loads should be positioned against a front-end structure and meticulously tied down to prevent forward movement

Before heading out for Roadcheck week, take ample time to secure your load properly. Your wallet and other motorists will thank you.

Other Areas of Inspection

ELDs and cargo securement are the emphasis of the Roadcheck, but they hardly constitute everything officers will be looking for.

Here’s an exhaustive list of everything included in the level I inspection:

  • Tires, wheels, rims, and hubs (account for 21.4% of all vehicle violations)
  • Valid CDL and endorsements
  • Medical Examiner’s Certificate
  • Seat belt use
  • Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse status
  • Signs of alcohol or drug impairment
  • Hours of service compliance beyond ELD falsification
  • Brake systems
  • Lighting devices
  • Steering and suspension
  • Fuel and exhaust systems
  • Coupling devices
  • Windshield wipers
  • Frame condition

As alluded to in this list, tires will be a primary concern of officers during the inspection.

If you need new tires before the inspection, England Carrier Services is running a massive sale on drive tires.

The CVSA Roadcheck is an enormous, sweeping effort to ensure truckers are safe… but for many carriers, the event poses a risk of being sidelined.

By taking the time to prepare, you can keep your truck in great shape, stay safe, and pass the Roadcheck with flying colors.
