It’s official: The FMCSA has announced that COVID-emergency hours extended for another 90 days… with most of the same qualifications as previous extensions.

This extended period begins on June 1 and will continue through the end of August. The FMCSA passed the extension because of a large, ongoing dependency from carriers on such hours.

As has previously been true, qualifying commodities must provide “direct assistance in support of emergency relief efforts related to COVID-19.”

Those commodities include:

  • Livestock and feed.
  • Medical devices relating to the testing, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19.
  • Vaccines and products related to the administration of vaccines preventing COVID-19.
  • Sanitization products, includes gloves, masks, etc.
  • Grocery products for the restocking of stores.
  • Various fuels, including propane, natural gas, and heating oil

Importantly, vehicles, building materials, and other commodities that were previously privileged to COVID-emergency hours have been disqualified with this extension. For a full list of dismissed commodities, see this list.

The FMCSA also noted that any commodity may be disqualified from the above list at any time.

For qualifying commodities, the FMCSA’s reporting requirements for carriers calling on the emergency hours will also stay the same.
