What Was the Crime?

From January 1 to July 31, 2023, Haneef Palmer targeted an unusual string of freight products, including frozen crab legs, televisions, commercial refrigerators, and, notoriously, dimes.

Palmer and his accomplices would break into cargo areas using bolt cutters and target trailers left overnight. In some instances, the ring would also assault sleeping carriers.

In one instance, the group attacked and severely injured a driver, exacerbating the sentence to include acts of violence.

Before the gavel dropped, this case already made national headlines with the theft of over $230,000 in dimes.

The Notorious Dime Heist

In April of 2023, a load hauling dimes—just dimes—was intercepted by a group of thieves.

Using the sophisticated means of large, black trash bags, the group shoveled as many inscriptions of Roosevelt as they could, hurling the President’s likeness across the parking lot in the process.

Over $230,000 was stolen. Because the commodity was instantly fungible, the coins seem to vanish into circulation.

The Conviction

After a superseding indictment in 2024, Palmer eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery, possession of items from an interstate shipment theft, theft of government money, and possession of stolen government money.

A 10-year prison sentence and $1,000,000 in restitution sent a clear message to the freight theft world: If caught, the consequences for cargo theft are severe.

Stakes are Rising

The size of the verdict was undoubtedly intended to intimidate a growing number of cargo thieves.

In 2025, CargoNet recorded 3,594 theft-related incidents. With losses nearing $725 million, a 60% increase year-over-year, the situation has become dire.

Let criminals take note: Before you steal on someone else’s dime, or hundreds of thousands of dimes, be prepared to pay top dollar… behind bars.
